Government access to personal information in online settings has been in effect since the early 2000’s and applies to all websites and all social media interfaces such as Facebook™, Twitter™ as well as short message services (SMS) such as text and instant messaging.
Our research project site www.spacesstudy.com is hosted by www.squarespace.com, a webhosting company located in the USA and as such is subject to U.S. laws. In particular, the USA Patriot Act which allows authorities access to the records of internet service providers. Canada has similar legislation seen in our Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
While our research project site, www.spacesstudy.com, does not ask for personal identifiers or any information that may be used to identify you, we at The SPACES Project want to ensure that visitors and participants are aware that all information and communication technologies (ICT’s) hosted in the U.S., such as comments, tweets, Facebook™ messages and blog posts etc. will be stored and accessed in the U.S.
